RI President's December Message

francesco arezzo

This month’s special issue of Rotary magazine is all about happiness, that most elemental of human yearnings. More than a feeling, though, this state of positive well-being, and the conditions necessary to create and sustain it, should be considered a universal right.

December also marks Rotary’s Disease Prevention and Treatment Month, when we highlight our members’ work to promote health and wellness, including mental wellness. Globally, nearly 1 in 7 people have a mental health disorder, according to a recent World Health Organization report. Yet only 9 percent of people with depression receive adequate treatment.

We are fortunate in Rotary to have a powerful way to support emotional well-being and happiness: friendship. The connections we build in Rotary can be a powerful force for change. I know this from personal experience.

When my fellow members first proposed that I become club president, I demurred. I had a stutter. I was terrified of speaking. But having club members who supported me and surrounded me with affection enabled me to face my fear, and I found a way to stand confidently before a crowd.

Today, I regularly address audiences — some numbering in the thousands — in a language that is not native to me. The Rotary members in my life helped me create lasting change within myself.

That fellowship gives us the courage and means to create lasting change in the world as well, and mental health services are in desperate need of improvement. The WHO reports that governments on average devote only 2 percent of their health budgets to mental health, and only 11 percent of that funding reaches community-based services. In some countries, only one trained mental health professional is available for every 100,000 people. The WHO has called for strategic and urgent action to close the gap.

Rotary can answer that call by championing mental health awareness in our clubs, working with local health systems, funding training for community health workers, and supporting initiatives that bring care to places where none exists. Even small investments in mental health yield enormous returns in productivity, public health, and happiness.

While we are creating lasting change in the world, we cannot forget to take care of each other. Past RI President Gordon McInally wisely reminds us that we must go beyond asking, "How are you?" We owe it to each other to instead ask, "How are you really?"

As we transition to a new year filled with new possibilities, let us Unite for Good — for healing, friendship, and access to happiness.

Theme for December

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

December 2023 – Coolamon Rotary

As Rotarians, we know that each month highlights one of the core areas that define our service and our impact. December focuses on Disease Prevention and Treatment—an area of focus that Rotary International is perhaps best known for worldwide, especially beyond our own Rotary circles.

For decades, the global eradication of polio has been Rotary International’s signature humanitarian effort. Since the early 1980s, Rotarians around the world have committed their time, resources, advocacy, and passion to this cause. Thanks to that unwavering dedication, the world is closer than ever to ending polio once and for all. Yet the work is not finished. Until the last child is protected, we will not—and cannot—set this torch down. That determination is part of who we are as Rotarians.

Disease prevention and treatment is one of Rotary Foundation’s Areas of Focus for a very good reason. Preventable diseases continue to limit the health, opportunity, and future of individuals, families, and entire communities. When health is compromised, education suffers, economic development is slowed, and quality of life is diminished. Addressing disease is not just about treatment—it’s about prevention, education, access, and sustainability.

This area of focus is also deeply interconnected with other Rotary priorities such as Clean Water and Sanitation, Maternal and Child Health, and Basic Education and Literacy. Healthy communities are stronger communities, and progress in one area helps fuel progress in them all.

As a Rotarian, you are part of a global network committed to creating lasting change. Your service, your generosity, and your advocacy matter. You are not just a volunteer—you are a Difference Maker. Together, we continue to take action, improve lives, and move the world closer to a healthier, more hopeful future.

Community Service

When December arrives, people’s thoughts naturally turn to what we can do for others. In Rotary, this mindset isn’t seasonal — it’s something we carry with us all year long. That said, the season of giving offers a special opportunity to reflect, refocus, and step up in meaningful ways.

Our club is deeply committed to working within our community to make life a little better for those less fortunate and to help build a community we can all be proud of. Through service, generosity, and teamwork, we strive to turn compassion into action.

The volunteer events we take part in this month are ones we have supported for many years, and we are grateful to continue these valued traditions. They serve as a reminder of the lasting impact we can make when we show up together, year after year, to lend a hand and make a difference.

Edmonton's Food Bank

Thank-you to each of you who volunteered at the Food Bank. This was a wonderful joint effort between staff from MacEwan University Health Centre and our club members and it was inspiring to see both groups come together with a shared purpose. It truly means a lot to see people take time out of busy lives to give back to the community.

There’s a saying that the moment you forget you’re volunteering to help change lives is when you realize—it’s changing yours, and that certainly rang true throughout the evening.

Together, we sorted an impressive amount of food donated by generous Edmontonians and packed countless hampers that will soon be delivered to families experiencing food insecurity. Your hard work, positive energy, and willingness to help made a real difference.

The evening definitely boosted our Christmas spirit and reminded us what this season is all about—kindness, generosity, and community.

Salvation Army Christmas Kettles

A tradition that's close to our hearts ❤️
For many years, our Rotary Club members have proudly jingled the bells and collected donations for the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign. Each ring of the bell represents hope, generosity, and our community coming together to support those in need during the holiday season.

Thank you to everyone who stopped, smiled, and donated. Your kindness truly makes a difference.

We're grateful to continue this meaningful tradition and to serve our community, one jingle at a time.

As the holiday season arrived, we were reminded of the joy, generosity, and fellowship that truly define our Rotary family. The past year was filled with meaningful service, strong connections, and shared accomplishments — and our Annual Rotary Christmas Luncheon was a wonderful way to celebrate all that we have achieved together.

This festive gathering was filled with laughter, good food, and plenty of holiday spirit. Sharing the occasion as a joint meeting with the members of the Rotary Club of Edmonton (Downtown) added to the camaraderie and highlighted the strong partnerships that make Rotary so special.

A special thank-you goes out to Al's Band, whose wonderful music added energy and warmth to the event and truly brought the festive spirit to life. Their entertaining performance was enjoyed by all and helped make the luncheon even more memorable.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this celebration. It was a joyful way to close out the year and reflect on the impact of our work, while looking ahead with excitement to the service, fellowship, and opportunities the new year will bring.

Edmonton West's 70th Anniversary

The Rotary Club of Edmonton West—sponsored by the Edmonton Downtown Club—was officially admitted to membership in Rotary International in 1955 with 21 charter members. Our charter president, Ben Lang, provided the leadership and vision that laid the foundation for the strong and vibrant club we are today.

This year, we proudly celebrate 70 years of service, fellowship, and community impact. For seven decades, our members have devoted countless hours to local and international projects, always guided by Rotary’s enduring motto: Service Above Self.

To honour this milestone, we are hosting a very special anniversary evening recognizing our rich history, celebrating our achievements, and looking ahead to the exciting opportunities still to come. It will be a night filled with memories, laughter, and inspiration—an event you won’t want to miss!

Our goal is for all our members to be involved and attend the event. Your support is essential to making this celebration truly meaningful.

Each member will receive four tickets—two for themselves and two additional tickets to invite guests. We encourage you to share this special evening with others who embody the Rotary spirit.
